Lake of the Pines Information

Lake of the Pines is a private recreational community 12 miles from downtown Auburn, and 12 miles from downtown Grass Valley, located in the foothills of the beautiful Sierra Foothills above the Sacramento Valley fog and below the snow.

The community fronts five miles of shoreline around a 229-acre Lake with shimmering blue waters. The elevation is approximately 1507 feet with surrounding hills climbing to nearly 1800 feet.Lake of the Pines Park and Lake

Homeowners appreciate the feeling of 24 hour security that goes along with an entrance guarded gate, which prevents the public from entering the community of over 1535 acres and 22 miles of private roads. Many lovely homes grace the 5 miles of shoreline of the manmade lake, which is 55 feet deep nearest the earthen dam. Other homes look down from the pine-studded hills and many have views of the golf course.

Originally stocked, the lake now supports a nearly inexhaustible supply of perch, blue gill, large mouth bass and catfish. Water skiing, sailing, boating, skin diving, swimming and fishing are permitted at the Lake. Property owners may avail themselves of a 61 slip Marina.

The picturesque golf course covers 90 acres with a pro shop and driving range.

Community Parks and beaches are available, strategically situated around the lake, with grills, benches, tables and recreational facilities.

The Homeowners Association provides the security guards, as well as the security patrol. The association is responsible for the maintenance of the golf course, the parks, the swimming pool, landscaping and the tennis courts.

The attractive clubhouse, overlooking the lake, offers a variety of dining opportunities. In addition to open dining, buffets, brunches, arrangements may be made for special affairs, such as meetings, weddings and banquets. The cocktail lounge and dance floor are open on a regular basis.

A separate building overlooking the main beach houses is the Yacht Club and is used by the bridge club and other organizations to hold their meetings.

Schools are nearby, Cottage Hill Elementary, Magnolia Intermediate School and Bear River High School. Forest Lake Christian School is a private school located on Combie Road within waking distance. Sierra College is located in Grass Valley about 11 miles away and also has a Rocklin Campus within 20 miles drive.

Lake of the Pines is 42 miles from Sacramento, 60 miles to Sacramento Airport and only eight miles from Auburn Airport.

Shopping is located at the Pine Creek Center, which is adjacent to the entry gate and offers restaurants, hardware store, bakery, veterinarian, dentist, beauty shop and grocery store. Also located close to Lake of the Pines is a shopping center with a Longs Drug Store, Starbucks, restaurants and gas station, gym and bank.

Outside of the gated portion of the community there is an adjacent area referred to as Lake of the Pines Ranchos, which has 5-acre lots and 22 miles of deeded equestrian riding trails. Some of the original lots have Lake of the Pines memberships available to them.

In 1966 this area was somewhat secluded and dominated by three large cattle ranches. The Schoellerman Ranch raised several thousand turkeys in addition to cattle. The Newton Ranch raised their own feed for their cattle operation for which they bought heifers, fattened them up for breeding stock, and ran an exclusive Quail Valley Hunt Club for hunting quail and pheasant. The Piliard Ranch was the largest of the three ranches, running over a thousand head of cattle.

The rolling hills were dominated by native oaks that were cut to make into charcoal, sold to the Union forces during the Civil War, and later sold to the Irion Mountain Mine. Many early Grass Valley buildings were faced with the bricks that the early Mormon produced from a brick kiln that they built in the area.

In 1966 Western Lake Properties acquired ownership and built the 600 foot dam that created the Lake of the Pines. The original developers and Boise-Cascade gave over ownership of all the amenities to the Property Owners Association when the original lots were sold.
